PHAREX finally found an antidote to Harbour Centre’s invincibility
as the Medics pulled off a king-sized 99-97 upset win and clinched a
quarterfinal berth in the PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup Saturday at
The Arena in San Juan.
In putting an end to Harbour’s 12-game winning
run, the Medics leaned on a brilliant ball distribution and gritty
defensive effort by Jam Alfad, Ian Saladaga, Sean Co and Don
Villamin down the stretch to post the biggest reversal in the
season-ending tournament.
The Batang Pier trailed most of the way until
Jerwin Gaco scored four straight points that enabled them to grab
the lead, 83-80.
But the Medics were not yet over with their
business as they dropped a murderous 14-4 blitz to grab the lead for
good, 94-87.
The Medics, who improved to 7-7, can secure a
twice-to-beat advantage in the next round if they beat Burger King
on Labor Day.
Saladaga shone brightest for the Medics with 26
points.
Earlier, Toyota Otis survived the season-high 33
points of Noy Javier to eke out an 89-81 win over Noosa Shoes and
clinch a quarterfinal berth.
In the first game, San Mig Coffee beat SEABA-bound
Nokia-Philippine Youth team, 76-60.
