BORACAY: Southwestern University clinched its fourth crown in the
women’s division while Foundation University took a second one in
the men’s side Saturday as the Nestea Beach Volley National
Circuit came to a close at the Hey! Jude sandcourt.
Janelle Tabio and Florian Gutierrez of
Southwestern won the coveted title and the P125,000 purse with a
thrilling 18-21, 21-19, 15-11 victory over Janez Igot and Jusabelle
Brillo of University of Visayas, the same team that defeated
Southwestern in last year’s finals.
Southwestern won the women’s crown in 2003,
2004 and 2005. It’s the only team to win three straight titles,
and with yesterday’s victory also became the first team in the
event’s 12-year history to win four titles, a feat never achieved
even in the men’s side.
In the men’s side, Rolando Agus and Arnel
Amadeo of Foundation used their height advantage to the hilt in
scoring a 15-21, 21-14, 15-9 victory over Southern Philippines
Foundation. It was Foundation’s second men’s crown since 2001.
Third place in the women’s side went to
University of Mindanao Tagum which defeated Far Eastern U, 21-15,
21-9, while in the men’s division it was St. La Salle Bacolod
which defeated UM-Tagum, 21-19, 18-21, 15-11.
Of the P125,000 that goes to the champion teams,
P25,000 goes to the coach. Runner-up is worth P80,000 and third
place P55,000.
