Arcilla, Tierro lead first-round winners

NATIONAL players Johnny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro breezed past separate rivals on Tuesday to lead the first-round winners in the 1st Gov. Anacleto C. Alcala Memorial Cup National Open at the Lucena City Tennis Club.

The top-seeded Arcilla outclassed Rocky Paglalunan, 6-4, 6-2, while the second-ranked Tierro demolished qualifier Albert Cornelio, 6-0, 6-1.

Also gaining second-round berths in the P150,000 tournament held in honor of the LCTC founder were fifth seed Elbert Anasta and seventh seed Alexander Lazaro.

Anasta overwhelmed Archie Mano, 6-1, 6-3, while Lazaro demolished Jerry Pacaigue, 6-1, 6-0.

Antonio Sagansay also made it to the next round following a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Baguio City’s Jimmy Tangalin, while Mario Sabas stamped his class over local wild card Michael Yasay, 6-0, 6-1.

Wild card Mark Balce, who played in the World Juniors Championships, needed an extra set to beat qualifier Jonathan Imperial, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Baguio City’s Marvelous Cortez and Fil-Am Joseph Contreras also won their opening-day matches.

Cortez downed fellow qualifier Andrew Tangalin, 6-4, 6-2, and Contreras prevailed over Christopher Muñoz, 6-1, 6-0.

In the women’s division, local pride Bien Zoleta and former junior standout Trudy Amoranto scored contrasting wins to advance in the next round of the Philta-sanction event organized by Quezon Rep. Procy Alcala (Second District) and Gov. Raffy Nantes.

The fourth-seeded Zoleta, who now plays for the national soft tennis team, clobbered Shirley Valer, 6-1, 6-0, while Amoranto survived Baguio City’s Bianca Pascual, 7-5, 6-4.
