Staging conventional theater musicals these days
seem to inculcate humanistic values indicative of personal and
spiritual transformations. But to some extent, these purveyors of
theatrical fantasies can be harmful as well.
Cinderella, the ongoing musical led by Tony
award-winning actress Lea Salonga in collaboration with an almost
interracial cast at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main
Theater ensemble cast has left some Filipino audiences literally
unmoved.
Perhaps, the staging did not focus enough on
basic storytelling. Compelling and emotive stories suspend one’s
disbelief by immersing audiences in emotion and involving them in
the protagonists’ travails. Instead, this play relies technology,
lavish spectacle and precise artistry to induce hypnosis.
