Women’s rides

A recent US study identifies the cars that most appeal to female buyers

No doubt some cars drip with machismo, automotive phallic symbols that could range in guise from sports cars to luxury sedans to hulking sport-utes. At the opposite end of the spectrum, some vehicles ooze with feminine charm and, interestingly, may also take the form of a sports car, a sedan or an SUV.

J.D. Power in its Power Information Network in June released its findings on the recent choices of women when it comes to automotive purchases. Conducted in the US (the world’s biggest car market), the study finds female buyers seem to be shifting to “crossovers,” which are mostly sport-utility vehicles that ride on car platforms and derided as “soft-roaders” or “cute-utes” by car guys. Interestingly, perennial favorite the VW New Beetle has been toppled from its top spot by another VW—the Tiguan compact sport-ute—while a third VW joins the list.
