PRC-US relations,
Fuerte to Prosper
On Mr. Joachim Proper’s rebuttal of my letter
(Tuesday Nov. 2 “On racism in USA, reply to J. Fuerte”), let me
clarify that my issue with Mr. Posper was his original comment that
Americans are racist against slant-eyed people. To quote Mr. Niall
Ferguson for whatever Mr. Fergson did or did not write is immaterial
and out of the question.
Let me point out also that partnerships do not
always mean that you have to agree with whatever conditions your
partners set. It doesn’t always work that way especially among
countries regardless of how closely they have been in association
with each other in the past because each country has its own
interest to promote and protect.
With regard to North Korea, Mr. Bush had
always made known his position from day one: that if North Korea
agrees to abandon its nuclear ambitions, America will remove her
from its list of terrorist countries. It’s not something that
America decided at the last minute. And just because that condition
did not sit well with Japan and North Korea doesn’t mean to say
that America has abandoned them.
Look at the larger picture: America’s huge
military structures and resources that have been part of Japan’s
and South Korea’s defense establishments for decades now. Where is
the abandonment there?
The problem is that whenever America does
something unfavorably affecting other countries—especially
minority and non-Caucasian countries—some of us are too quick to
cry racism without regard to understanding first the rationale
behind America’s actions. Then we try to bring back America’s
past injustices to justify our one-sided contention. That’s a
shallow argument!
