Cagayan town mayor, three
others killed in ambush

A town mayor of Cagayan and three of his security escorts were killed while four other were wounded after they were ambushed by a group of unidentified men Wednesday night in Cagayan.

Authorities identified the victim as Mayor Raul de la Cruz, 61, of Rizal town in Cagayan.

Three of his security escorts Ramon Gundan Jr., Jomar Buluran, driver and Federico Cunay were also killed in the incident. While victims Nilo Patay, Alan de la Cruz, Victor Baluran and Aurelio Caulian were wounded and currently being treated in hospital.

Reports reaching Camp Crame disclosed the incident happened around 10 p.m. at Maddarulug Village, Solana town, Cagayan.

The victims were on board a government owned bus (RDH-969) and traveling along Tuguegarao-Piat highway when unidentified men fired at them.

It was also learned the attackers made sure that de la Cruz is dead before they left the crime scene.

Police Regional Office (PRO) 2 director Chief Supt. Roberto Damian, said investigation is still on going but they are initially looking at three possible angles behind the incident which include political, personal and possible involvement of the New People’s Army.

“We are initially looking at these angles, but we don’t want to speculate until we have gathered enough evidence,” Damian said.

Damian said de la Cruz have been given three police security escorts because of the death threats he has been receiving.
