A town mayor of Cagayan and three of his security escorts were
killed while four other were wounded after they were ambushed by a
group of unidentified men Wednesday night in Cagayan.
Authorities identified the victim as Mayor Raul
de la Cruz, 61, of Rizal town in Cagayan.
Three of his security escorts Ramon Gundan Jr.,
Jomar Buluran, driver and Federico Cunay were also killed in the
incident. While victims Nilo Patay, Alan de la Cruz, Victor Baluran
and Aurelio Caulian were wounded and currently being treated in
hospital.
Reports reaching Camp Crame disclosed the
incident happened around 10 p.m. at Maddarulug Village, Solana town,
Cagayan.
The victims were on board a government owned bus
(RDH-969) and traveling along Tuguegarao-Piat highway when
unidentified men fired at them.
It was also learned the attackers made sure that
de la Cruz is dead before they left the crime scene.
Police Regional Office (PRO) 2 director Chief
Supt. Roberto Damian, said investigation is still on going but they
are initially looking at three possible angles behind the incident
which include political, personal and possible involvement of the
New People’s Army.
“We are initially looking at these angles, but
we don’t want to speculate until we have gathered enough
evidence,” Damian said.
Damian said de la Cruz have been given three
police security escorts because of the death threats he has been
receiving.
