60 years old and still in adolescence

Governments and civil society groups throughout the world are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR). But in most countries, respect for HR is still in adolescence.

Two things are unfailingly recalled in the speeches of government officials about human rights. First is that the Philippines is the first country to formally approve and adopt the UNDHR. The second is that Foreign Affairs Secretary Carlos Romulo who was elected first president of the UN General Assembly, co-authored the Declaration’s Article 1. That article says: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
