A harmful distraction

The President and her key Cabinet people keep saying that the citizenry should unite behind her administration which, they claim, is focused on socio-economic growth and minimizing poverty.  They berate the political opposition and leftist politicians for preoccupying themselves with the production of “political noise.”  This, they say,  distracts the Filipinos from the economic and nationbuilding work they should be doing—in support of the Arroyo administration and the country. 

 “Political noise” also harms the image of the country abroad, they claim, for it undermines the President’s drive to attract more and bigger foreign direct investments.  Key administration officials also picture journalists as villains because they amplify the opposition-manufactured “political noise” and even aid communists and military rebels who want to overthrow the government.
