Three years ago, my niece Anna attended her junior
prom. I remember helping her plan what to wear, booking a make up
artist, making an appointment with the salon for her maniped
(manicure and pedicure) and hot oil treatment among others. Aunt and
niece were both excited waiting for the big night.
This year is her younger sister
Alisa’s turn. I asked her mom to take her only to my
designer-friend Randy Ortiz who is known for making beautiful prom
dresses. Alisa and I were on the chat room recently and she asked me
some advise on how she should prepare for her prom. I know I wrote
about a similar topic during Anna’s time, but I’m sure all the
girls attending their first Junior Prom this year would surely like
to know how to prepare for that special evening.
Below are tips that can come in
handy, so read on…
• It is important to prepare
early so that you can relax and enjoy your evening.
• Choose your dress: buy a
dress that suits your style and budget.
• Get a pair of shoes and
matching bag to complement your outfit. Retail stores such as SM and
other specialty stores in the mall carry elegant off-the-rack pieces
that are affordable. SM by far, is still tops when it comes to
affordable shoes for all occasions, not to mention style and
comfort.
• Working with a fashion
designer. If you do not know the fashion designer personally, it is
safe to do some research first. Find out if he specializes in party
dresses and gowns. I highly recommend Randy Ortiz, Rhett Eala and
Patrice Ramos-Diaz. Ladies who wear their creations always say they
feel beautiful in their clothes. You definitely want to hear that,
right? Randy and Rhett also specialize in men’s wear so guys who
have been invited as escorts might also want to check them out.
• It is still the guy who
should pick up the girl at home. Guys, if you don’t have a car,
don’t fret. Tell your parents to check out the yellow pages. There
are more than a dozen rent a car companies listed. They also can
provide a chauffeur if you need one. Some parents are more
comfortable that their daughters are driven either by their elder
brothers or a family driver.
• Guys and girls, don’t
forget your corsage and boutonniere.
• Book an appointment with a
salon early as most schools have their proms on the same month. If
there is a salon in your village or a nearest one that is reputable,
go for it! Better yet, if you know a make up artist who can come to
your house then that’s even better. I called my make up artist
friend to do Anna’s make up at home. She loved her make up that
night!
• For prom hairstyles, I would
also suggest that you look into fashion magazines and see what are
the current hair trends. You don’t want to wear an outdated
hairstyle on that important night.
• Lastly, eat something light
before you leave the house as there may be a program or speech
before dinner and you don’t want your date hearing your stomach
make those funny sounds.
• Don’t panic in case
something comes up that is unplanned. Relax, and stay cool.
