Japanese sweep opening singles

JAPAN enjoyed the cool weather on Friday to sweep the opening singles of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Cup Group I tie against the Philippines at the jampacked Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Go Soeda scored a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, victory over US-born Patrick John Tierro in the first singles while Takao Suzuki displayed his awesome net game and brilliant court coverage to end Cecil Mamiit’s winning run with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2 decision.
