PAHONOCOY boxing team grabbed four gold medals to snatch the overall
championship crown of the First Golden Gloves Monico Cup held over
the weekend at the SM parking lot in Bacolod City.
Jorin Labordo (28kgs), Junrey Melligen (42kgs),
and the Sibugan brothers, Alvin (30kgs) and Ruben (36kgs.), ruled
their respective division in this event supported by Philippine
Sports Commissioner Eric Loretizo and Bacolod Rep. Monico
Puentevella.
The 12-year-old Jorin Labordo stunned the crowd
with his power punching style to overpower John Bombite of Barangay
10. The 3-foot-5 Labordo was later on named as the tournament’s
best boxer.
Junrey also made his presence felt by trouncing
teammate Ronel Parcon while Alvin defeated Ronelo Gaspo of Barangay
10.
On the other hand, Ruben won via default over
E.R. Gonzales of Singcang Airport.
“The boys are determined to win, their
discipline and hardwork paid off,” said Pahonocoy’s trainer
Gerardo Melligen, father of 2005 Southeast Asian Games silver
medalist Mark.
Punta Taytay squad placed second with three
golds courtesy of Roland Servania (26kg), Jake Servania (51kg) and
Remus Orcada (45kg) while Sumag team took the third spot with a gold
and three silver medals.
“The turnout was okay because we were able to
see talented young boxers. A good program is needed to develop their
skills and mold them into future national athletes,” said Loretizo.
