Fare issue divides operators

THERE is a brewing war among operators of ordinary buses in Metro Manila in connection with the petition filed by a group of operators which asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to reduce the minimum fare by 30 percent.

Bus operators from the northeastern part of Metro Manila who ply the Fairview route are asking for a reduction in the minimum fare from P8 to P5.60.

The said rollback will only cover that particular route, because the petitioners claimed that most of the passengers from their area are minimum-wage workers.

However, other bus owners that also operate along the Fairview route are against a fare rollback, claiming this is unfair to other bus operators and public utility jeepneys.

LTFRB Chairman Thompson Lantion said he will call for a meeting next week with the concerned Metro Manila bus operators to discuss the matter and come up with a solution that will be acceptable to all parties.
