A sugar-free breakfast

By Joseph Javier

Eating right is often a challenge when dining out, especially for diabetics and weight watchers. Pitfalls are encountered in dishes loaded with sugar, salt, carbohydrates, and fat, in portions that are much too large, and the healthier alternatives are more expensive, and tend to be bland, dry, and uninspiring.

I know what you’re thinking, but youth and yuppies should not be left out in making healthy decisions when it comes to what you eat. You’re never too young to take care of your diet. When it comes to our bodies, input equals output. Think about it—his is more than just food for thought!

Sticking to your diet and enjoying your meal shouldn’t be a problem, not with new choices available to diners with special dietary needs. Sugarnot, a specialty deli, coffee shop and bakeshop, is a boon to the health-conscious, with its selection of sandwiches, soups, pastas, salads and desserts—all sugar-free, low-carb, and low-fat, starting with the most important meal of the day: breakfast.

Glucerna SR, a product of Abbot Laboratories, is a low-calorie diabetes nutrition formula that offers complete and balanced nutrition for people with diabetes, with a unique Triple Nutri Action System that helps manage blood sugar, cholesterol level, and weight. Used as a meal replacement or snack supplement, it is clinically-proven to provide optimum blood sugar response and is ideal for diabetics when used in the context of a healthy lifestyle with proper diet, exercise, and medication.

Recently, Sugarnot teams up with Glucerna SR, the No. 1 in diabetes nutrition, to launch a new range of all-day breakfast and lunch dishes using Glucerna SR as a key ingredient in the menu.

Chef Willie Domingo, a former executive chef at the food and nutrition department of a leading hospital was commissioned to develop the recipes for the new breakfast line. With years of working with clinical dietitians in making sure that the dishes are suitable for healthy nutritional requirements, and his training in serving fine-dine therapeutic meals for patients with special nutritional needs, Chef Willie took on the challenge of creating healthy, yet hearty meals for Sugarnot’s latest offerings.

“Unlike regular food, therapeutic food— food designed for nutritional, healing purposes—is very precise because there is a delicate balance for measuring the correct volume of nutrients that go into the food, especially those that are prepared for people with nutritional requirements or limitations,” explains Chef Willie. “Portions have to be controlled and there are ingredients that cannot be used, such as sugar, salt, and fats.”

Glucerna SR was also incorporated into the menu. “It’s actually quite a versatile ingredient,” points out Chef Willie. “You can mix it with vinegar, citrus juices, batter, sauces, dressings, and many more, and it will instantly add more nutrition to the food.”

Chef Willie’s gourmet concoctions are four fulfilling meals for the new Sugarnot-Glucerna all-day breakfast fare: Eggs Benedict with Blueberry Muffins, poached eggs on toasted, low-fat and low-carb blueberry muffins served with sausages and Glucerna SR pesto dressing; Supreme Sugarnot Pancakes, whole-wheat pancakes with Glucerna SR’s special blend, served with Torani syrup and banger sausages; Want Something Complex?, homemade, sugar-free muesli and Glucerna SR Jell-o float with minimum-fat milk and fresh fruit salad; Weight Watcher’s Delight, egg-white omelet with sun-kissed tomatoes and grilled chicken julienne strips drizzled with Glucerna SR pesto sauce; Veggie Veggie Light salad, and Chix and Veggie Roll.

The breakfast meals, along with the rest of Sugarnot’s sugar-free, low-fat, low-carb cuisine and its bestselling sugar-free desserts, are now available at Sugarnot branches at the Podium in Ortigas, The Block in SM City North Edsa, Westgate Alabang, SM Megamall and South Super Highway, Makati.
