THE Philippine Sports Commission
approved this week the cash incentives of four athletes who
surpassed the Southeast Asian Games records in December.
PSC Commissioner Eric Loretizo
said the incentive worth P100,000 is separate from the one given to
gold-silver-bronze medalists under Republic Act 9064 (Athletes and
Coaches Incentives).
Tracksters Henry Dagmil and
Arniel Fererra, and swimmers Daniel Coakley and James Walsh will
receive their additional cash bonuses in two weeks time as the PSC
board has already submitted its funding request to the Philippine
Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor).
“We submitted a request to
Pagcor last Thursday so we are just waiting for them to release the
fund [for the additional cash incentive],” said Loretizo.
The 25-year-old long jumper
Dagmil improved the 7.81-meter he established during the 2005 Manila
SEA Games to 7.87.
Ferrera retained his hammer throw
title by measuring 60.98 meters, besting his old record of 60.47
meters also in Manila.
Coakley, born and raised in
Hawaii, won the 50-meter freestyle event in 22.80 seconds to
erase the 22.98 seconds of Chainapasaen of Thailand set two years
ago.
Walsh also made his presence felt
in men’s 200-meter butterfly, nailing an impressive 2:00.81
minutes against the previous record of 2:01.84 of Malaysian Anthony
Ang in the 2001 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.
The incentives for
record-breakers are given pursuant to Board Resolution 102-2002,
which was the basis of a similar bonanza awarded to long-distance
ace Eduardo Buenavista for setting a new SEA Games mark during the
21st Games.
