The Bureau of Immigration has filed charges
against 22 employees for various violations, ranging from grave
misconduct to neglect of duty, in line with its thrust to cleanse
its ranks of misfits and undesirables.
Of the 22 employees, 13 were recommended for
dismissal by the Department of Justice after being found to have
committed grave misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the best
interest of the service.
Five were suspended from one to six months after
investigations showed that they committed simple misconduct. Four
were reprimanded for violation of reasonable office rules and
regulations.
The 13 recommended for dismissal committed
offenses like kidnap-for-ransom, extortion and estafa.
Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan vowed
that the campaign against erring employees would continue, saying
that the bureau is now transforming itself from a graft-laden to a
graft-free agency sensitive to the needs of its clients.
“I will not tolerate recalcitrants, misfits,
or any wrongdoing among the employees of the Bureau of
Immigration,” Libanan said.
Earlier, Libanan also ordered the investigation
of six immigration officers assigned at the Ninoy Aquino
International Airport for alleged involvement in an international
trafficking syndicate using the Philippines as transit point.
