Govt consults with private sector

By Katrina Mennen A. Valdez, Reporter

The administration’s economic managers will meet today with members of the academe, business groups and church leaders to discuss how government can be efficient.

Trade Secretary Peter Favila said the dialogue is government’s way of reaching out and addressing the different concerns of Filipinos.

He said he expects the private sector to present a list of the top 10 inefficiencies in government. Favila added they plan to ask which government agencies and what specific behaviors of public officials are inefficient.

The findings will be reported to President Gloria Arroyo, and that will put pressure on everyone in government to shape up, he said.

“No agency would want to be identified with inefficiencies, since the result will be made public,” he said, adding that the findings of the National Competitiveness Council will be presented during the dialogue. The council was created to help the Philippines become globally competitive.

Last year, the council identified red tape as the main issue in dealing with government, and as a result, the President made Favila the anti-red tape czar.

Participants in today’s dialogue include the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities, Management Association of the Philippines, Asian Institute of Management, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, and the Federation of Philippine Industries and Philippine Chamber of Commerce.

Favila said a Cabinet meeting that will map strategic plans to address the inefficiencies will be convened right after the dialogue.
