ENVIRONMENT and Natural Resources Secretary Lito
Atienza on Wednesday issued an administrative order to rehabilitate
the Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando river system in partnership with local
governments in Bulacan.
The rehabilitation of the river
system started on Wednesday after Atienza declared the major
waterway as a water quality management area that would enhance
economic activity and development on a sustainable basis.
Atienza said the DENR would work
in partnership with Gov. Joselito Mendoza of Bulacan, Bulacan
Mayors Epifanio Guillermo of Marilao, Bartolome Ramos of Sta. Maria,
Eduardo Roquero of San Jose Del Monte and Obando Vice-Mayor Leonardo
Fontanilla.
The river is 55 kilometers in
length traversing the cities of Caloocan, Valenzuela, and Malabon in
Metro Manila and San Jose del Monte in Bulacan, as well as the towns
of Meycauayan, Marilao, Obando and Sta. Maria.
The river system gained notoriety
in 2007 when it made the list of “30 most polluted water systems
in the world” that was issued by Blacksmith Institute, a New
York-based environmental watchdog.
