Designs for success!

By Joseph Javier

Before gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue and sporting lingerie for Victoria’s Secret, Heidi Klum was an undiscovered stunner from the small West German city of Bergisch Gladbach.

While still in high school, Klum won a modeling competition that launched her career in Europe. In the ’90s, she went on to conquer the American market, but wasn’t content on banking on her looks. She launched her own fragrance, jewelry and clothing lines and of course her hit reality fashion television show—Project Runway.

Now no longer just a supermodel, this certified mega media mogul is back with an exciting fourth season of Project Runway as host, judge and producer of the Emmy-nominated program. Showing on Discovery Travel & Living channel, Project Runway introduces 15 new fashion hopefuls eager to show off their style skills and designing prowess.

Selected from thousands of hopefuls, the designers will again compete for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be one of the three to showcase their talent in Bryant Park at New York’s Fashion Week and win a grand prize package including a 2008 Saturn Astra and $100,000 in seed money from TRESemmé to help launch his or her own line. The winner’s designs will be also featured in a spread in Elle Magazine, and will have the opportunity to sell a fashion line on Bluefly.com.

The Project Runway season four designers are: Carmen Webber, Chris March, Christian Siriano, Elisa Jimenez, Jack MacKennoth, Jillian Lewis, Kevin Christiana, Christina Scarbo, Marion Lee, Rami Kashou, Ricky Lizalde, Simone LeBlanc, Steven Rosengard, Kathleen Vaughn, and Victorya Hung.

Televiewers with a passion for fashion can follow the weekly design competition every Thursday beginning February 21 from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. with encores replayed every Sunday at 1 p.m.  Heidi Klum will once again be joined by a panel of industry luminaries, including top women’s and men’s wear designer Michael Kors and Elle Magazine fashion director Nina Garcia, to decide who is “in” and who is “out”. Tim Gunn, chief creative office at Liz Claiborne Inc., acts as a mentor to the contestants as they navigate weekly fashion challenges and “make it work”. In what will prove to be the most exciting season yet, some of the biggest names in fashion, sports and design, will guest star this season.

Lauded as an inspiration to many aspiring designers with her honest style advice and charitable personality, it also turns out that Klum’s helpfulness is also extended to other celebs. The 34-year-old supermodel says that she and her family would welcome ailing pop princess, Britney Spears, with open arms as the troubled singer seeks to reassemble her life.  Now isn’t that nice?!

In a German radio interview, Klum said, “Spears can call me and come live in our house with us for a couple of months. I would help set her straight.  I am sorry when a young person gets thrown so off track. She has, of course, lived an extremely wild life,”

Klum’s life has not been a cake walk either and she is used to the pressure.  Heidi was previously married to Ric Pipino and had a daughter with Italian entrepreneur Flavio Briatore.  Now, she has since married pop star Seal, with whom she has  two children.  Despite her rocky past, the Project Runway star is now content with her success.

“I have never been as happy as I am today,” says Klum. “I have found the man of my life, and we have three great kids. They are all so different and fantastic that it really can’t get better than this.”
