NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana: The New Orleans Hornets, seeking to preserve
their place atop the National Basketball Association Western
Conference, acquired Bonzi Wells from Houston on Thursday.
The Hornets acquired Wells and guard Mike James
from the Rockets for guard Bobby Jackson, rookie Adam Haluska and a
2008 second-round pick, all part of a three-team deal with the
Memphis Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies get forward Marcus Vinicius and
sent the draft rights to forward Sergei Lishouk for the draft rights
to center Malick Badiane, who was selected by the Rockets in the
second round of the 2003 draft.
Wells was the main piece of the puzzle. He has
averaged just 9.2 points and 5.1 rebounds in his second season with
the Rockets.
Wells, who will be joining his fifth team in
five seasons, is a legitimate low-post scorer at the small forward
spot who can give the Hornets some off the bench.
While the Hornets have been one of the surprises
of the season, coach Byron Scott has recently said they needed to
bolster their bench.
