DOHA: Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia followed Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic
in being blown off course by a vicious sandstorm at the Qatar Open
on Thursday which brought havoc to large parts of the Gulf.
The storm blew up from Saudi Arabia and played a
role in the departure of the two top seeds here at the $2.5 million
tournament.
Serbian top seed and favorite Ivanovic had to
withdraw with a sprained ankle, having slipped on sand near the
baseline on Wednesday.
Then Kuznetsova, the second-seeded former US
Open champion, also went out. She was beaten 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) by
Sybille Bammer, the 15th-seeded Austrian who is the only mother
playing regularly on the WTA Tour.
