WHISTLER, Canada: Swiss Nadia Styger won the Whistler women’s
World Cup downhill race Friday, finishing ahead of runner-up Lindsey
Vonn and Julia Mancuso.
Styger finished in one minute, 45.30 seconds on
the same course that will be used for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Vonn, who clinched the World Cup overall
downhill title on Friday, was second in 1:45.31 while fellow
American Mancuso was third in 1:45.49.
Canada’s Britt Janyk finished fourth (1:45.65)
while Austrian veteran Renate Goetschl rounded out the top five with
a time of 1:45.69.
With two races left in the season, Vonn has
earned enough points to finish at the top of the overall downhill
standings.
Heading into Friday’s race Vonn led Goetschl
by 252 points and Janyk by 275 points in the downhill standings.
Goetschl needed to finish in the top three and
have Vonn place behind her in order to prevent Vonn from taking the
title.
