Poor man’s supercomputer at Pagasa

Linux-powered off-the-shelf clustered PCs cost only P1.5m

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration
 (Pagasa) of the Department of Science and Technology now uses a low-cost computing system capable of rainfall and typhoon forecasts, a task that in the past could be done only by supercomputers.

“It is the poor man’s supercomputer,” said Pagasa Flood Forecasting Branch officer-in-charge Alan Pineda as he spoke recently with Tech Times. He is also the agency’s ICT Department head.
