JAKARTA: Indonesian prosecutors said Monday the three Bali
bombers in death row had filed the second case review against their
sentence with the main intention of delaying execution. The
bombers— Imam Samudera, Amrozi and his older brother, Ali Ghufron—have
been convicted of plotting and carrying out the October 2002
bombings at two nightclubs that killed 202 people on Bali island,
and have been sentenced to death.

PHNOM PENH: Detained Khmer Rouge leader Ieng
Sary, one of five top regime cadres expected to face a UN-backed
trial over Cambodia’s 1970s genocide, has been hospitalized
indefinitely, officials said Monday. The illness is not threatening
his life, an official said.

SEOUL: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
stressed shared interests and values with South Korea after talks
here Monday at the start of a regional tour to end an impasse over
the North’s denuclearization. Analysts saw her visit as a chance
to ease tensions between Washington and the outgoing center-left
administration of President Roh Moo Hyun, and ultimately boost
six-party talks aimed at scrapping North Korea’s nuclear weapons.

TOKYO: Japan’s Emperor Akihito has shown early
signs that he may suffer the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis
because of his therapy for prostrate cancer, reports said Monday.
The palace is considering reducing the 74-year-old’s official
duties or making other adjustments to his lifestyle to prevent his
bones’ deterioration, Jiji Press and other Japanese media said.

ISLAMABAD: Former premier Nawaz Sharif called
Monday for Pakistan’s ousted judiciary to rule on the legality of
President Pervez Musharraf’s position before any parliamentary
move to impeach him. Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-N formed a
coalition with the Pakistan People’s Party of slain ex-premier
Benazir Bhutto last week, after their groupings trounced
Musharraf’s backers in parliamentary elections. They are seeking
further allies to get them the two-thirds majority they need to
impeach the president, who has repeatedly dismissed calls by Sharif
and other opposition leaders to quit.

HAVANA: Cuba’s new President Raul Castro has
named Gen. Julio Casas Reguiero to replace him as the country’s
defense minister. The announcement came after Raul Castro was
elected the president of Cuba. Reguiero, 72, previously served as
first vice minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and number 2
in the Defense Ministry after Raul Castro, overseeing economic
activities.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina: A local girl who turns
17 on Monday has become a mother of seven after giving birth to her
second set of triplets, drawing attention to teen sex education and
contraception laws in her Catholic country, media reports said.
