A 30-year-old Filipina domestic helper in Hong Kong was meted a
two-year jail term after she was found guilty of forging her
employer’s signature and amassing some P1.5 million ($302, 000) in
a span of 14 months.
The Filipino domestic helper was identified as
Ria Cecilia Caguioa, who pleaded guilty to 18 counts of theft on
February 27 before Eastern Court Magistrate Garry Tallentire.
Tallentire sentenced her to a total of 24 months
in prison. A separate charge of forgery against Caguioa was
withdrawn.
Reports said that courts records showed that
from August 2006 to October last year, Caguioa stole checks from her
employer, Raymond Chow, a civil servant, which she used to deposit
money to her account.
She withdrew the money from her account as soon
as the checks cleared.
Chow only discovered the crime when he noticed
three suspicious transactions in his bank account during the past
few months. His inquiry led to a confirmation by the bank that a
total of 31 checks with forged signatures had been drawn from his
account.
