CEBU CITY: City College of Manila (CCM) downed Ateneo de Davao,
98-80, on Thursday to advance in the seniors quarterfinal round of
the 62nd National Students Basketball Championship at the historic
Cebu Coliseum here.
Jaymar Marte had 23 points in leading the
Merlions to their third win in four outings.
Other Big City dribblers who finished with
double figures were Marlon dela Cruz, who had 17, followed by Neil
Arambala and Jervy Estacio, who chipped in 15 and 13 points,
respectively.
“We’re glad to have made it to the
quarterfinal round. It will be very tough in the next round but
we’ll just try to do our best,” said CCM coach Randy Alcantara.
The Asian College of Technology Cyber Knights
downed Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 107-101, and
Pilgrim Christian College of Cagayan de Oro City, 99-76, for a sweep
of Group B.
Also advancing into the quarters of this
tournament organized by the Basketball Association of the
Philippines (BAP) in cooperation with BAP-Region VII and backed by
Converse, Nature’s Spring Mineral Water, and Fortuna Hotel and
Bakery were Southwestern University (SWU), University of Visayas
(UV) and University of San Carlos (USC).
Southwestern University nipped defending
champion Angeles University Foundation (AUF), 64-62, to lead Group A
with three wins.
University of Visayas also ruled Group C with
three wins. Lancers Von Harry Lanete scored 16 points while Jun
Lasala and Fil-American Gregory Slaughter, the 6-foot-11 native of
Virginia, contributed 12 and 11 points each in UV’s 99-57
demolition of Perpetual Help College-Jonalta System of Binan,
Laguna.
USC, on the other hand, won by default over
Western Leyte College for sweep of Group D. The Warriors had earlier
defeated Universal College of Nursing in Paranaque (UCNP), 82-75.
Other teams gaining quarterfinal slots were AUF
in Group A, University of Luzon in Group C and Universal College of
Nursing-Paranaque in Group D.
The quarterfinal matches still being played at
press time were between SWU Cobras and UCNP; USC Warriors and AUF
Great Danes; Cyber Knights and University of Luzon; and UV Lancers
and CCM Merlions.
In the high school division, Benedictine
College-Quezon City topped Leyte National High School to dominate
Group A with a 3-0 card and arrange a semifinal match against Group
B second-placer University of Pangasinan (3-1).
In the other semis pairing, it will be Group
B’s University of Luzon (2-1) taking on Group B leader Pilgrim
Christian College of Cagayan de Oro (3-1).
The champion in the seniors and high school
divisions will play in an exhibition tournament in Fujian Province
in China next month.
