CCM Merlions reach quarters

CEBU CITY: City College of Manila (CCM) downed Ateneo de Davao, 98-80, on Thursday to advance in the seniors quarterfinal round of the 62nd National Students Basketball Championship at the historic Cebu Coliseum here.

Jaymar Marte had 23 points in leading the Merlions to their third win in four outings.

Other Big City dribblers who finished with double figures were Marlon dela Cruz, who had 17, followed by Neil Arambala and Jervy Estacio, who chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively.

“We’re glad to have made it to the quarterfinal round. It will be very tough in the next round but we’ll just try to do our best,” said CCM coach Randy Alcantara.

The Asian College of Technology Cyber Knights downed Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 107-101, and Pilgrim Christian College of Cagayan de Oro City, 99-76, for a sweep of Group B.

Also advancing into the quarters of this tournament organized by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) in cooperation with BAP-Region VII and backed by Converse, Nature’s Spring Mineral Water, and Fortuna Hotel and Bakery were Southwestern University (SWU), University of Visayas (UV) and University of San Carlos (USC).

Southwestern University nipped defending champion Angeles University Foundation (AUF), 64-62, to lead Group A with three wins.

University of Visayas also ruled Group C with three wins. Lancers Von Harry Lanete scored 16 points while Jun Lasala and Fil-American Gregory Slaughter, the 6-foot-11 native of Virginia, contributed 12 and 11 points each in UV’s 99-57 demolition of Perpetual Help College-Jonalta System of Binan, Laguna.

USC, on the other hand, won by default over Western Leyte College for sweep of Group D. The Warriors had earlier defeated Universal College of Nursing in Paranaque (UCNP), 82-75.

Other teams gaining quarterfinal slots were AUF in Group A, University of Luzon in Group C and Universal College of Nursing-Paranaque in Group D.

The quarterfinal matches still being played at press time were between SWU Cobras and UCNP; USC Warriors and AUF Great Danes; Cyber Knights and University of Luzon; and UV Lancers and CCM Merlions.

In the high school division, Benedictine College-Quezon City topped Leyte National High School to dominate Group A with a 3-0 card and arrange a semifinal match against Group B second-placer University of Pangasinan (3-1).

In the other semis pairing, it will be Group B’s University of Luzon (2-1) taking on Group B leader Pilgrim Christian College of Cagayan de Oro (3-1).

The champion in the seniors and high school divisions will play in an exhibition tournament in Fujian Province in China next month.
