Escudero seeks to up retirement age at 70

As long as they are willing and physically fit to perform their job, employees both in government and the private sector should be allowed to work up to 70 years old.

Opposition Rep. Salvador Escudero 3rd of Sorsogon made this contention in filing a measure seeking to extend to age 70 the retirement age for government and private sector employees.

“Our employees in both the government and the private sector are chiefly diligent, hardworking individuals who exert all their efforts, talents and skills in their chosen profession,” Escudero said.

Under the present law, the maximum retirement age for government and private sector employees is 65 years old.

He added that giving a chance for employees to work until 70 years old will give them the chance to continue providing for their families and dependents for an additional five years after they reach 65 years old.

Likewise, there are a few employees whose skills and dedication have contributed largely to the company’s success, and are strong enough to continue working beyond 65 years old with the consent of management.

Meanwhile, the President’s son, Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado “Dato” M. Arroyo is proposing House Bill 2708 or the “Long-Term Care Act for Senior Citizens,” that seeks to establish and institutionalize long-term care for senior citizens. The bill provides for social services and livelihood programs aimed at promoting and advancing the social and economic well being of senior citizens.
