Quezon City wants own rights office

QUEZON City Councilor Janet “Babes” Malaya has proposed the creation of a human rights office for the city to address cases of human-rights violations.

Malaya, chairwoman of the council’s committee on justice and human rights, said that the creation of the human rights office would be a great help to ensure that the basic human rights of Quezon City residents will be protected.

Based on Malaya’s proposed ordinance, a human rights desk shall be established at City Hall that will act on all forms of human violations committed against any resident of Quezon City.

“It will be conducive for Quezon City residents to ensure that their human rights are fully protected not only in letters but also in spirits,” Malaya said.

The human rights desk will be branched out to the city’s 142 barangays with the City Hall desk serving as the main desk.

Among the duties of the proposed office is to provide conciliation and mediation to resolve human rights disputes. It will also establish cooperative linkages with the police, the Commission on Human Rights, the Phil. Alliance for Human Rights Advocates and other organizations and persons promoting advocacy on human rights.
