CAREER, LIFE, SUCCESS
By Jay Jay Viray
Setting and achieving career resolutions

What’s your resolution for 2008? Besides losing weight and avoiding vices, many people also vow to improve their professional lives. Common promises include not to be late anymore, be more productive on the job or learn to manage stress. However, many of these so-called resolutions are forgotten by the end of the first quarter as the busy months arrive. Some people find their resolutions difficult to stick to so they just dropped them. In such cases, a resolution becomes just another promise meant to be broken.

To make your resolutions work, make them realistic. Before you set your goals and plans for the year (which you should have done last December), identify what you want to change in your work attitude or add to your behavior. Be specific in what you want to achieve and if the resolutions are many, list them on paper in your journal. Come up with a plan on how you will go about them. Establish deadliness if necessary.

The best time to start is now. Do not procrastinate. The holiday hang-over should not be a reason for delay. Come to the office early. Arrange your files to help you become more efficient. Organize your to-do’s by making a list of tasks according to importance and priority. If you know what you need to accomplish for the day or the week, you won’t get lost.

The key to achieving improvement in your career life is not in the number of resolutions you make but in the level of commitment you have. A deep sense of commitment will guide you as you take the steps toward change. Treat your resolutions as something that you need to do to achieve a significant development in your professional life so you would not just give them up especially when you encounter challenges.

Bear in mind that no resolution is small. A resolution such as being more cheerful, as simple as it may sound, will influence your attitude and boost work productivity and relationship. Maintaining strong relationships with co-workers and your superiors will benefit you even when you decide to leave for another company or career. You wouldn’t have to look far in case you need references for job application.

As you move on, aspire to continue what you have started. Keep your resolutions in mind by putting them in your daily planner or post-its. Celebrate your little achievements to inspire you to stick with your goals. The small steps you make today will result in bigger accomplishments tomorrow.
