National Students Basketball in Cebu

ALL is set for the staging of the 61st National Students Basketball Championship from February 24 to March 1 in Cebu City.

Basketball Association of the Philippines President Prospero Pichay said a total of 48 teams from different regions are joining the annual tournament which will return to the Queen City of the South after 12 years.

The tournament has three categories—high school boys (20 teams), senior collegiate men (20 teams) and senior collegiate women (eight teams).

“We look forward to another successful staging of the National Students Basketball Cham-pionship and we would like to thank Cebu for hosting this prestigious event,” said Pichay, who will grace the formal launching of the tournament in a press conference to be hosted by BAP Region 7 Director Lorenzo “Chao” Sy next week at the Fortuna Hotel in Cebu City.

PRISAA President Emmanuel Angeles, also the owner of Angeles University Foundation which is the defending senior men’s champion, and BAP Secretary-General Graham Lim are also invited to attend the tournament launching in Cebu City.

Cebu was chosen as this year’s host after its bid was approved during the BAP National Congress held in Manila on December 12. Present were Pichay, BAP Chairman Rep. Luis Villafuerte, BAP Vice-Chairman Gov. Douglas Cagas of Davao del Sur and the members of the BAP executive board.

Last year, the National Students Basketball Championship was held in Ibahay, Aklan. In 2006, Legazpi City in Albay hosted the senior men’s and women’s divisions while the high-school division was held in Daet, Camarines Norte.
