SECOND-seeded Leander Lazaro flashed his winning
form to capture the boys’ 18-under title over top seed Kim Ivor
Saraza, 6-2, 6-2, in the 19th Andrada Cup Age Group Tennis
Championships Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The 14-year-old Lazaro played consistently at
the baseline to post his second straight title victory over Saraza.
“I just made it a long rally and it turned out
that I was the more consistent,” Lazaro, who scored a 5-7, 6-2,
6-2 win over Saraza in the Olivarez Cup last year.
“I make it a point to improve on my game in
every competition. My uncle and father taught me to play tennis when
I was seven years old, but I started competing since I was nine,”
added the nephew of RP No. 5 Alexander Lazaro.
Lazaro, winner of the Asian Tennis Federation
Under-14 late last year, is set to compete in the Laoag Invitational
Open on January 18 and will have his hands full in the Junior Davis
Cup tryouts in February.
Earlier, second-seeded Vince Salas rallied past
Eric Olivarez Jr., 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, to pocket the 10-under unisex
title.
In other matches, No. 2 Jacob Lagman outplayed
fourth seed Manzo Bengzon, 6-1, 6-0, to advance in the boys’
14-under against No. 5 Dheo Talatayod, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over No. 7
Hans Asistio.
In the girls’ 16-under division, No. 2 Shannin
Olivarez won over Macy Gonzales, 6-0 (ret.) to advance against
Chynna Mamawal, who upset top seed Rachel Lucero, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
