OAKLAND, California: Former National Football League defensive
player of the year Warren Sapp, who led Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl
title in 2003, announced his retirement on Friday.
The 35-year-old Sapp announced the end of his
career on his web site, saying, “I’m done.”
In 198 games, Sapp registered 96 1/2 sacks and
573 tackles. John Randle (137 1/2) is the only tackle in NFL history
with more career sacks.
An integral part of many rugged defenses in
Tampa Bay, Sapp was a major influence in leading the Bucs to their
only Super Bowl title.
Sapp was selected 12th overall by Tampa Bay in
1995. He spent his first nine seasons with Tampa Bay, being named
defensive player of the year in 1999.
In March 2004, Sapp signed a seven-year,
$36.6-million contract with the Oakland Raiders.
