MABUHAY Satellite Corp., the
wholly owned subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.,
said Wednesday that it had signed a deal with Viettel Corp. of
Vietnam to support the neighboring country’s fast-growing cellular
network.
Mabuhay Satellite’s agreement
with Viettel calls for the provision of satellite bandwidth and
services for PLDT’s satellite-based portion of Vietnam’s
cellular network.
“This will support the
company’s [Viettel] massive network growth as it aims to support
national territory particularly in areas where terrestrial
facilities are unavailable,” PLDT said.
No further details were given
about the agreement between the two companies.
Viettel provides telecom and
Internet services. It is also a producer of telecom equipment,
electronics and computer hardware. The company owns nine
subsidiaries—the Viettel Fixed Telephone, Viettel Mobile, Viettel
Data-communication, Viettel Telecom, Viettel Internet, Viettel Post,
Viettel Survey and Design, Viettel Construction and Viettel
Import-Export.
Mabuhay Satellite owns part of
Agila-II, the Philippines’ second multifunction communication
satellite. It has about 10 kilowatts of total on-board power, which
makes it the most powerful satellite in the entire Asia-Pacific
region.
The company’s other owners are
Pilipino Telephone Corp., Republic Broadcasting System, Philippine
Communications Satellite Corp., Cable Entertainment Corp. and
Philippine Satellite Corp. together with Pasifik Satelit Nusantara
of Indonesia and China Everbright Group Limited.
