WHAT other things do you think should be on your
“to do list” this year?
• Don’t sweat the small
stuff. I tend to stress over a lot of things and most of them happen
to be “minor” ones like being restless and grouchy while in
traffic when the fact is, I cannot do anything about it and have no
control over it. I’ve also had people complain already about my
almost Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) behavior and how it is
affecting my relationships, so for this year, I am taking baby steps
in conquering my OCD behavior and taking it to a level that is less
likely to stress myself and people I constantly interact with.
• Life is about making choices.
When I was younger and made many mistakes and wrong decisions, I
would end up blaming others, blaming the situation and even blame
God. I learned later that life is all about the choices we make. I
told a good friend recently who confided to me about being verbally
abused by her boyfriend. I told her that she has to decide whether
she wants to be treated that way. If she cannot stand it anymore, I
told her that she should just leave him and move on. True love is
about respect. It could be anything. A career, a wardrobe makeover,
a change of environment; the bottom line is to go for whatever will
make us happy. Another important thing to remember is that only you
can make yourself happy. You are responsible for all the decisions
we make.
• Last, I suggest we keep a
journal. I’ve had a journal since I was in high school. Funny, how
sometimes I would go through the stack in my cabinet and pick out
remembrances from my high-school days and I would be laughing while
reading through each page. It can also be therapeutic.
I kind of took a leave from
keeping a journal about two years ago and then I decided to start
another one this year. A journal is a reminder of what you were and
what you have become over the years, where your career and personal
life has taken you and what you still want to pursue in your life.
It can be a wonderful, comforting feeling. Whenever I read my
journals, it brings me to a place where nobody else knows me but me;
and then I take pride in saying that after all these years, I’m
still the same person no matter where I am now.
As they say, “Seize the day.”
Make the most out of everything in your life. No regrets. Just
lessons learned. Think positive every day and thank the guy above
for all the blessings, and even the hardships you had to go through.
Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride.
