The government is set to assist the Swiss-based food giant Nestlé
Group in getting around the tariff rates being slapped by Asean
countries on the company‘s breakfast line.
Trade Secretary Peter Favila said at a press
briefing that Nestle has asked the government’s assistance in
pushing a tariff scheme for the company’s breakfast cereals and
other food products being shipped to Asean members and other nearby
countries.
Favila said that Paul Bulcke, Nestlé Group ‘s
chief executive officer, wants the government to intervene in
negotiating for reduced tariffs in the export destinations of Nestlé
products.
“Nestlé wants the Philippines to be its food
hub in the region and other neighboring countries, [and] lowering
the tariff rates would be a way of showing investors that the
Philippine government helps its investors,” he said.
