INCHEON AIRPORT, South Korea: Chief US nuclear envoy
Christopher Hill called Thursday on North Korea to disable and
declare all its weapons programs by the end of next month to keep a
disarmament deal alive. Speaking on the latest leg of a regional
tour aimed at restarting stalled talks, Hill said the reclusive
communist state had to show “full transparency” for the process
to move forward. His remarks came after talks here with incoming
South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak, who formally takes office on
February 25 and has indicated he will take a tougher line on the
North than his predecessor.

JAKARTA: Thirty Indonesian academics and public
servants have won Endeavor Award scholarships to undertake
professional development and research in Australia in 2008, national
Antara News Agency reported on Thursday. The Australian Embassy to
Indonesia announced the winners of the awards, and praised the
high-achieving Indonesian scholars who build enduring professional
and personal networks with Australian partners. Fitri Widiantini, a
Biotechnology expert from Indonesian Padjadjaran University, said
her Endeavor Award would enable researchers from Australia and
Indonesia to work together to find solutions to common problems.

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s ex-dictator Suharto
underwent medical tests Thursday as the health of the 86-year-old
remained critical and plans for a new pacemaker stayed on hold, his
doctors said. Suharto was hospitalized last week with anemia and low
blood pressure, as well as heart, kidney and lung problems. Marjo
Soebiandono, one of the large team of doctors assembled to treat the
former president, told a press briefing that Suharto was “still
unstable.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s king on Thursday
urged citizens to preserve peace and harmony, in an appeal that
comes as ethnic discord continues to seethe in the multicultural
nation. “They must steer clear of actions that will create
tensions, being disrespectful to one another, refrain from harping
on sensitive issues and defying the law,” Tuanku Mizan Zainal
Abidin said in a speech. The king said that every effort should be
made to ensure the nation was free from elements that could harm
peace, harmony, stability and people’s well-being, the state news
agency Bernama reported.
