Malacañang is willing to abandon attempts to amend the 1987
Constitution, after getting much flak for suggesting it to resolve
the decades-old Muslim secessionist movement in Mindanao, in a
report posted on the website of GMA-7 television network.
In a report aired over dzBB, Presidential
Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza reportedly said the Arroyo
government is aban-doning its bid to amend the Constitution, even
while saying the move was meant to pave the way for the forging of a
peace agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Dureza said it is better to abandon the move,
rather than some sectors insert or propose political amend-ments to
the Constitution.
The government’s latest plan to amend the
Constitution, this time, to accommodate a Muslim state as part of
Philippine territory, drew flak from the political opposition and
other Malacañang critics.
Malacañang has urged critics to stop putting
color on a plan to amend the Constitution to shift to a federal form
of government to accommodate the MILF.
Presidential Management Staff head Cerge Remonde
said this year’s edition of the Palace’s Charter change plan is
for peace in Mindanao.
