CHR wants to help police,
military on national ID

The Commission On Human Rights (CHR) is reportedly eyeing close cooperation with the human rights offices of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in mapping out their action plan on a national ID system.

In a report filed by the Philippine News Agency, CHR Commissioner Wilhelm Soriano said the PNP and AFP human rights offices do a relatively good job of reviewing and introducing changes to policies affecting human rights.

“I’m hoping they will coordinate with us with regards their plan on pagbuhay ng national ID system [reviving the ID system] so we would know what’s happening, what’s the approach,” Soriano said in a radio interview.

He said both offices have constantly coordinated with the CHR, and would relay to their respective institutions any policy that may be perceived as violating human rights.

“If we see something wrong from a human rights perspective, we can relay it to them and they can inform their respective superiors about it,” he said.

Earlier, Soriano said the CHR will keep a close eye on the police and military on how it plans to implement the ID system.
