LETTER

Bird flu and vegan diet

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap should be commended for temporarily banning birds and poultry products from Korea (“Bird, poultry imports from South Korea banned,” Jan. 8). Of course, the best way to stop the spread of bird flu—and save billions of animals from pain and suffering—is to stop raising animals for food. The crowded, inhumane conditions that farmed animals exist in—crammed together with barely enough space to turn around and fed unnatural diets—are reservoirs where viruses and bacteria multiply and spread.

According to the World Health Organization, humans can be infected with bird flu by eating undercooked infected chicken and by eating food prepared on the same cutting board as contaminated chicken or eggs. Even touching the broken eggshells of infected eggs puts consumers at risk. Everyone can help prevent bird flu pandemic by eating a vegan diet. Please see www.GoVeg.com or contact People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia-Pacific (PETA) at Info@PETAAsiaPacific.com for a free Vegetarian Starter Kit.
