Bird flu and vegan diet
Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap should be commended for temporarily
banning birds and poultry products from Korea (“Bird, poultry
imports from South Korea banned,” Jan. 8). Of course, the best way
to stop the spread of bird flu—and save billions of animals from
pain and suffering—is to stop raising animals for food. The
crowded, inhumane conditions that farmed animals exist in—crammed
together with barely enough space to turn around and fed unnatural
diets—are reservoirs where viruses and bacteria multiply and
spread.
According to the World Health Organization,
humans can be infected with bird flu by eating undercooked infected
chicken and by eating food prepared on the same cutting board as
contaminated chicken or eggs. Even touching the broken eggshells of
infected eggs puts consumers at risk. Everyone can help prevent bird
