YOUNG entrepreneur and business activist (yes,
people, not all activists wave the red banner!) Jason Gavina—a
19-year-old student from the University of the Philippines in Los Baños—has
been selected by the British Council to be the Philippine
representative to the Greenwich Forum which is currently ongoing in
the United Kingdom.
The Greenwich Forum is a
conference for young people hosted in the UK by the British Council
prior to the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland,
(January 23 to 27).
Sixty young people, aged 16-19
years old, from 50 countries were carefully chosen from among
hundreds of hopeful and equally deserving candidates to gather in
Greenwich and brainstorm their way toward laying down challenges for
the world leaders assembled in that Swiss resort that is now
synonymous with this annual gathering of the movers and shakers of
the global stage.
From among that select
number a handful—with Jason hopefully among them—will be chosen
to bring those challenges to Davos and air them there.
Jason, whose activism is in the
field of social entrepreneurship, is the president of the Philippine
Jaycees in Los Baños. He is also actively involved with the
National Youth Camp on Leadership and Entrepreneurship.
He promotes financial literacy
among the youth as well as encourages them to have entrepreneurial
mindsets by organizing seminars and workshops that involve business
sector leaders.
While in Greenwich, Jason will
push for his advocacy on the establishment of global and regional
centers for Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurship Education.
If chosen to move on to attend
the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland Jason will have the
opportunity to get to speak to world and business leaders like
former British Prime Minister (and now special envoy for the Middle
East) Tony Blair, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (Kissinger
and Associates), Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Chairman and CEO
of Pepsico USA Indra Nooyi among others.
The British Council is the UK’s
international organization for educational opportunities and
cultural relations and the world’s leading cultural relations
organization. It British connects people with learning opportunities
and creative ideas from the UK to build lasting relationships around
the world
The British Council (its patron
is Her Majesty the Queen) operates in 109 countries and territories
worldwide and has been operating in the Philippines since 1978.
The areas it focuses on in the
Philippines are arts, science, education and civil society. It is a
nonpolitical organization which (quite sensibly!) operates at
arm’s length from government in whatever country it is located.
