Japan’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Minister Eiichi Oshima, joins
Vice-President Noli de Castro, Transportation and Communications
Secretary Leandro Mendoza, and Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon
to inaugurate the new Bacolod-Silay Airport.
The new airport facility, located in Barangay
Bagtic, Silay City, approximately 20 kilometers from Bacolod City,
boasts of a 2,000-meter long runway in a 187-hectare land. Besides
the runway, the passenger terminal building with access road and car
park, air traffic control equipment and facilities, cargo building
and other ancillary buildings were also constructed.
Funded by a 9-billion-yen loan from Japan, the
new airport is expected to boost economic activities and contribute
to the improvement of the quality of life of many Filipinos in
Negros Occidental.
The project is part of Japan’s commitment to
help in the government’s efforts towards poverty alleviation and
mitigation of regional disparities by strengthening the economic
structure towards sustainable growth. Japan is the Philippines’
largest source of ODA with assistance ranging from grants and loans
to technical cooperation.
