Japan-funded new Bacolod-Silay
airport inauguration set today

Japan’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Minister Eiichi Oshima, joins Vice-President Noli de Castro, Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza, and Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon to inaugurate the new Bacolod-Silay Airport.

The new airport facility, located in Barangay Bagtic, Silay City, approximately 20 kilometers from Bacolod City, boasts of a 2,000-meter long runway in a 187-hectare land. Besides the runway, the passenger terminal building with access road and car park, air traffic control equipment and facilities, cargo building and other ancillary buildings were also constructed.

Funded by a 9-billion-yen loan from Japan, the new airport is expected to boost economic activities and contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of many Filipinos in Negros Occidental.

The project is part of Japan’s commitment to help in the government’s efforts towards poverty alleviation and mitigation of regional disparities by strengthening the economic structure towards sustainable growth. Japan is the Philippines’ largest source of ODA with assistance ranging from grants and loans to technical cooperation.
