Sumilao farmers to keep on ‘walking’

Cardinal Rosales said the farmers are fighting for what is right and what is just

EXACTLY a month since they met with President Arroyo in Malacañang, the Higaonon farmers of Bukidnon on Thursday decided to continue their battle, not in court, but in the hearts and minds of the people and in the international information arena until they are able to reclaim the contested 144-hectare Sumilao estate.

“Last time, we walked from our houses to the halls of power in Malaca­ñang to knock at the hearts and conscience of the powerful. It appears they will not use even an ounce of their powers to fulfill their promise of returning our land,” the farmers said in a press conference in the presence of Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo.
