THE country’s top professional golfers vie for the P1.3-million
champion’s purse in next week’s The Country Club Invitational in
Canlubang.
Angelo Que, who rallied from four strokes down
to beat Elmer Salvador in last year’s finale, seeks a rare
back-to-back title in the tournament held in honor of ICTSI founder
Don Pocholo Razon.
After Cassius Casas won the inaugural staging in
2003, no player has won the event twice. Past winners were Tony
Lascuna (2004), Jerome Delariarte (2005) and Juvic Pagunsan (2006).
The top 21 finishers in last year’s staging
have been given automatic slots with the rest of the select
29-player field tapped by the sponsors headed by ICTSI Chairman
Ricky Razon.
Meanwhile, an 18-hole pro-am event will be
staged on January 23 as a prelude to the keenly awaited championship
with a distinguished list of invited guests from the business sector
and other fields participating.
The top 21 players after two days will advance
to the final two rounds of the championship, which also features the
country’s top amateurs, headed by national champion Anthony
Fernando and fellow national team members Ferdie Aunzo, who get the
chance to compete against the pros as part of their preparations and
training for stints abroad
