THE Philippines will host the Asian Football
Confederation Challenge Cup from May 11 to 18 in Bacolod City.
Philippine Football Federation President Mari
Martinez said he received the letter of approval from the AFC, thru
its Secretary-General Datu Paul Mony on January 16.
“We wrote the AFC expressing our intention to
host the event on December 28,” said Martinez.
Martinez said that the PFF is now in the process
of selecting the members of the team for the AFC Challenge Cup.
“We’re holding tryouts right now. We’re
not just looking for 18 players to fill in the slots in the team. We
are looking for the best. We want to form a very competitive team
for the Challenge Cup,” said Martinez.
Martinez said the Philippines will be up against
Tajikistan, Brunei and Bhutan. “The biggest challenge will
definitely come from last year’s AFC champion Tajikistan. But we
will also train hard for the other two teams.”
The PFF is scheduled to hold a board meeting to
discuss its annual budget and calendar of activities.
Martinez said the two biggest projects this year
are the grassroots development program (under 13) which they are
eyeing with MILO and the completion of the PFF headquarters in Pasig.
“We are targeting to finish our office on
March and hopefully, we can have the inauguration by April,”
