HOLLYWOOD: Remember Frankie Muniz, who starred
in Malcolm in the Middle? Now he’s an all-grown-up 22-year-old,
and besides his love of racing cars, he loves to “dabble” in
real estate. He already has bought and sold several homes, making a
profit on each, and now he has his Sunset Boulevard manor on the
market for $3.9 million. You no doubt know Frankie took a break from
acting to try his hand at race-car driving, but now he has returned
to what he does best: acting.
While most are talking about what is to come in
2008, let us take a look back at what has happened in years gone by.
After John Wayne won an Oscar for playing Rooster Cogburn in True
Grit, he said: “If I knew it was that easy to win, I would have
put an eye patch on 35 years ago.” . . . It has all changed now,
but in the old days there was the Hays Code for films, and some of
the restrictions were: No kissing for more than three seconds; no
mention of sexual hygiene or venereal disease; no sex relations
between whites and blacks; no showing of the inside thigh of a
female between the garter and the panties. If people appeared in bed
together, one had to have a foot on the floor. HOW THINGS HAVE
CHANGED!
Back to now . . . “Gubanator” Arnold
Schwarzenegger was reported to have said that after his governorship
is over, he “would like to return to acting.” This kills the
rumors he would like to stay in the political arena and seek a
higher office. We’ll just have to wait and see. Before he became
an actor he was into bodybuilding, and some of his titles were Mr.
World, Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia. I guess we just have to wait
and see how his scenario plays out.
How about these for names? Apinya Sakuljaroensuk
and Pan-ek Ratanaruang? She stars in and he directed a film titled
Ploy. Just be glad you don’t have to spell it, and I’m glad they
are not making another film for a while. It took me many minutes to
get that spelling correct. And while we’re on the subject of
spelling, I caught Mary Poppins on the tube recently. It’s a film
that goes on and on, like The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music and
Casablanca. The dancing is exceptional, so is the music, but I found
the plot a bore. And speaking of spelling: I can spell
“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”—one of the songs from the
film. How about that?
BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Yup. Lindsay, Paris,
Nicole, Britney and “other names in the news” do get paid large
sums to appear at parties and nightspots. . . . That’s Michael
Douglas’ voice introducing “NBC News With Brian Williams”
nightly on NBC. . . . Noel Coward was a playwright, actor, singer,
composer and a socialite. BUT, did you know he was a spy doing
undercover work during World War II? I sure didn’t! . . . And
David Letterman’s company that produces his and other shows is
called World Wide Pants.
