The ruling Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) is putting
up “a powerful united front” for the 2010 elections, House
Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., also Lakas-CMD chairman, said on
Tuesday.
The so-called powerful united front will be
presented on February 7 in a meeting of a national directorate of
Lakas-CMD. That date marks the 15th anniversary of Lakas-CMD.
The Speaker said the party’s bets should come
from Lakas as much as possible, but is also open to forming a
coalition with other political parties.
“Our first priority is to choose a Lakas
candidate. That is our first and foremost priority. But we are
agreeable also to putting together, as we have always done since
1992, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2007 [elections], great coalitions
which have been very successful in the management and running of the
House of Representatives.” de Venecia said.
De Venecia reaffirmed that Lakas remains the
most powerful and biggest political party in the country.
“We’re still the largest political party in
the Philippines, in the House [and] in the Philippines, in terms of
governors, mayors, vice-mayors, board members and councilors
throughout the [country]. But we’re still reaching out for
coalition allies,” de Venecia pointed out.
In the House, Lakas is the dominant political
party with the highest number of members at about 90, compared to
other political parties and members of de Venecia’s “Sunshine
Coalition.”
