ALASKA got a big lift from
Willie Miller in the crucial stretch to repulse Coca-Cola, 89-92,
Wednesday in Game One of their best-of-three quarterfinal series in
the 33rd Smart-PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Aces, who advanced to the
next round for the 22nd time in the last 23 conferences, were
struggling three-fourth of the way until Miller delivered two
straight baskets capped by a triple.
“We knew it’s going to be
tough with Asi Taulava playing well. We have to do a lot of pushing
to keep him away from the perimeter. It’s a little bit scary,”
said Alaska coach Tim Cone.
Alaska’s win wasted the effort
of the 6’9 Fil-Tongan who posted his 15th double-double in the
conference by scoring 22 points on top of 25 rebounds, one rebound
short of his career-high 26.
Both the Aces, who are seeking
for their second straight semifinals appearance and the Tigers, who
are looking for their first semis entry since the 2004 Fiesta
Conference, are vying for the right to meet Sta. Lucia Realty in the
best-of-seven series.
Miller finished with 23 points,
seven assists and two steals while Reynel Hugnatan chipped in 17
points. John Ferriols and Mike Cortez made 11 points each.
Mark Telan provided the needed
support for Taulava by scoring 13 points and six rebounds while
Ricky Calimag added 12 points.
Meanwhile, Sonny Barrios has
accepted the position of commissioner. He took over the post vacated
by Noli Eala.
