FOR winning the most number of gold medals in the 24th SEA Games in
Thailand last year, the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA)
is the hands-down choice as the Most Outstanding National Sports
Association (NSA) in the coming San Miguel Corp.-Philippine
Sportswriters Association (PSA) annual awards night at the SM Mall
of Asia.
Bannered by the 23-year-old Miguel Molina, the
RP tankers pocketed eight of the 41 golds in the biennial meet, two
of them in record-breaking fashion in the men’s 200-meter
butterfly and men’s 50-meter freestyle through James Walsh and
Daniel Coakley, respectively.
Molina, responsible for half of the swimmers’
total gold medals, capped the heroic by running away with the SEA
Games’ Best Male Athlete award.
For the feat, PASA, under President Mark Joseph,
will be the recipient of the award given by the PSA to an NSA that
did exceptionally well during any given year.
Counting the two gold medals the Filipinos also
won in diving courtesy of Sheila Mae Perez (women 3-meter
springboard) and the duo of Jaime Asok and Ryan Rexel Fabriga
(men’s synchronized 10-m platform), the country actually bagged 10
golds from the pool as diving, water polo and synchronized swimming
also falls under the umbrella of PASA.
“Without doubt, PASA deserves the honor as the
PSA’s Most Outstanding NSA for the year 2007,” PSA President
Aldrin Cardona of the Tribune announced.
PASA will be among the handful of personalities
and entities to be feted by the country’s oldest media
organization first established in 1949, during a two-hour awards
ceremony set February 16 and sponsored by Shakey’s, the Philippine
Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor),
Accel and Raymundo’s Trophies and Sculptures (www.raymundosawards.com).
To be broadcast live over DZSR Sports Radio 918,
the event can also be seen through the Internet by typing
