Seven of 10 Filipinos in Mindanao believe presidential candidates
cheated in the 2004 elections, while almost six of 10 think
President Gloria Arroyo was involved in poll fraud, a Pulse Asia
survey showed.
The survey, which was conducted in December 2007
and commissioned by the Genuine Opposition, showed that 70 percent
of the respondents believe there was cheating during the 2004 race
to Malacañang, while 26 percent say none of the 2004 presidential
candidates committed poll fraud in Mindanao.
The Pulse Asia survey indicated that 58 percent
of the respondents believe that President Arroyo cheated in the
Mindanao provinces during the 2004 presidential elections.
Nine percent, meanwhile, said all of the
candidates cheated, while 1 percent did not give a response.
Two percent of the respondents said they believe
that then-presidential candidate Sen. Panfilo Lacson also cheated,
while another 2 percent said Eddie Villanueva was also involved in
poll fraud.
One percent said Fernando Poe Jr.,
standard-bearer of the Genuine Opposition, and then Sen. Raul Roco
cheated in the 2004 elections. Both have since died.
The proportions of those who believe there was
electoral fraud in 2004 were high in all socio-economic classes.
About 81 percent of the respondents coming from the A, B and C
classes said there was cheating in the 2004 elections. Holding the
same view were 68 percent from class D and 72 percent from class E.0
The survey was conducted from December 1 to 5 in
Butuan City, Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, Maramag in Bukidnon,
Prosperidad in Agusan del Sur, Tubod in Lanao del Norte, Cotabato
City, Davao City, General Santos City, Isulan in Sultan Kudarat,
Mati in Davao Oriental, and Nabuntaran in Compostela Valley.
Three-hundred of the respondents came from the
urban areas, while another 300 came from the rural areas.
