Former High Court Justice is Comelec chair

President Gloria Arroyo on Saturday announced the appointment of former Supreme Court magistrate Jose Melo to head the embattled Commission on Elections (Comelec) starting February 2, when two of the poll body’s commissioners are to retire. President Arroyo announced Melo’s appointment from Switzerland.

From Malacañang, the government-run Philippine News Agency reported that Deputy Presidential Spokesman Lorelei Fajardo confirmed Melo’s appointment as the new Comelec head.
